Climate challenges that create real impact

Netlight and GoClimate have launched a joint initiative that proves climate action doesn't need to be complex, flawless, or out of reach.

Since 2024, Netlight employees have been challenged over the course of a full year to take on 12 simple yet powerful climate challenges. For every person who completes a challenge, Netlight contributes €10 in climate finance to certified climate projects. Small choices, repeated often. Engagement you can see – and that truly counts. Now it's your turn to join the initiative and take on the challenges at your workplace!

What is the challenge about?

This is a company-wide challenge for real climate impact – designed for everyday life, not ideal worlds.

  • Employees take on monthly climate challenges
  • Every completed action delivers measurable climate benefits
  • Behavioural change is directly linked to real climate financing
  • The result is both internal culture change and external climate impact

It's not about being perfect. It's about starting, doing – and doing it together.

👉 Ready to take on the challenge? Start your own climate challenges and register your company – and we'll add you to the list of organisations helping drive the transition.

Why this matters – right now

There is no "later" anymore. We are living through a climate crisis, and the window to avoid the worst consequences is rapidly closing. On top of that, it's an election year in Sweden. Politics matters – but we can't wait for decisions to be made or trust that action will come in time. Companies, organisations and individuals must act in parallel.

What's missing isn't knowledge – it's speed, courage and action. When many people each do a little – at the same time – the impact adds up fast.

How the challenges work

The challenges are designed for real lives, not ideal conditions. They are easy to join, easy to talk about at work, and concrete enough to feel meaningful in everyday life. In previous years, challenges have included donating a garment to second-hand, bringing a packed lunch to work, choosing trains over domestic flights, or introducing one vegetarian day per week. Small changes that, when many people make them together, hold significant climate potential.

Each challenge is grounded in facts, but driven by curiosity, community and the desire to make a difference – not by guilt or finger-pointing.

Why this works so well

This isn't another sustainability document gathering dust. It's an initiative that:

  • makes the climate issue human, concrete and approachable
  • creates energy, pride and conversation within organisations
  • delivers verified climate impact – here and now
  • shows that companies can lead the transition, not just react to it

And in an election year, when the future truly is at stake, it sends a clear message: We're not waiting. We're acting.

Now we want more companies to join

Imagine if climate engagement became something you do together at work – not just something you read about in the news.

We are entering a decisive decade. This is a concrete way to move from words to action – quickly, credibly and together. 👉 Start the challenges in your organisation today and let us know you're in – and we'll highlight your company as part of the movement for real climate impact. Because the climate can't wait. And the future is shaped by what we do – not by what we plan to do someday.

Choose your own setup

Flexible setup for participating companies Companies that take on the challenges can choose their own setup. Each completed challenge can be linked to climate financing for certified climate projects – as Netlight has done – or the challenges can be used on their own as a concrete way to engage employees and drive everyday behaviour change. Regardless of the approach, the initiative contributes to greater awareness, action and real change.

Background Netlight and GoClimate have collaborated for several years on Netlight's sustainability efforts. With a shared belief that climate action must be concrete, close to everyday life and easy to engage with, the partnership took the next step in 2023. That's when Netlight commissioned GoClimate to develop the climate challenges launched in 2024 – an initiative built on trust, shared ambition and the desire to make a real difference in daily life. So far, the initiative has helped prevent 2,271 tonnes of carbon dioxide from being emitted, through financing certified climate projects. A collaboration that shows what happens when companies move from strategy to action – together.

List of challenges 2026

January

Replace one purchase with a second hand option this month

Replacing purchases of newly produced items with second-hand ones can have a truly great impact on the climate.

Did you know: Buying a second-hand sofa can save up to 90 kg CO₂, as furniture production often involves energy-intensive processes and materials. Choosing a second-hand bike can save around 200 kg CO₂, avoiding the emissions from manufacturing new metals and components. A refurbished laptop can save even more, between 200–300 kg CO₂, depending on the model and materials used.

Commit to this if you have bought - or plan on buying - something second hand this month!

February

One vegetarian day a week for a month

It is no news that reducing your meat intake is one of the most powerful things you can do for the climate. Even modest dietary changes can make a huge difference!

Did you know: A new study shows that if high-income countries reduced their meat consumption by just 13% - about one vegetarian day per week - it could remove a staggering 125 billions tons of CO2 from the atmosphere.

Commit to going veggie one day a week (or more!) for February!

March

Recycle weekly

It is inevitable to end up with empty packaging from food and other purchases, cluttering your space as well as your waste bin - so let's recycle weekly this month!

Did you know: Recycling helps save energy. If you recycle one glass bottle, it saves enough energy to light a 100-watt bulb for four hours, power a computer for 30 minutes, or a television for 20 minutes. And cardboard boxes can be recycled at least seven times and can be used to make new packaging boxes and even furniture!

Commit to recycling empty packaging this month!

April

Do not throw away any food leftovers for an entire month!

Clear the fridge of small leftovers and turn them into a buffet, and bring leftovers from dinner as a lunchbox to work.

Did you know: A third of all food currently goes to waste. That's like if we would buy three bags of groceries and throw one away as soon as we get out of the store. Absolutely crazy, not least considering that 50% of emissions from the food industry come from food waste!

Commit to no leftovers!

May

Repair an item instead of buying new or throwing it away

There is no such thing as throwing something away - it always goes somewhere. To live within the planet's boundaries, we should aim to keep our electrical items for at least 7 years and buy no more than three new clothing items per year.

Did you know: Hand something in to a tailor or repair shop, or fix it yourself this month!

If you don't have anything to repair right now but have already fulfilled this task in 2026, that counts too!

June

Sustainable commuting

Do all your commuting by biking, walking, public transport or using VOI for a month.

Did you know: Transport is one of the largest sources of emissions in Europe, and road traffic is a major contributor to both climate change and air pollution. Cars emit several times more CO₂ per passenger kilometre than buses and trains, especially in urban settings. Beyond climate impact, air pollution is one of the leading environmental health risks globally. Shifting how we move through cities improves air quality, public health and liveability – all at once.

Be part of the solution and commit!

July

Skip the flight and explore locally

Skip the flight and explore local places this July! Local trips often encourage walking, cycling, or hiking, which are not only climate-friendly but also promote well-being.

Did you know: By choosing a local holiday and skipping that flight, you are likely to reduce your carbon footprint by 20% or more, depending on your lifestyle.

Do you plan to skip flights for the month of July?

August

Air-dry your laundry

Air-dry your laundry instead of using a tumble dryer this month.

Did you know: Tumble dryers are among the most energy-intensive household appliances. Skipping the dryer can cut a laundry cycle's energy use by more than half, reducing both emissions and electricity costs. Air-drying also extends the lifespan of clothes – slowing down the need for new production in a fashion industry already responsible for a significant share of global emissions.

Commit to drying smarter this month!

September

Use your vote. Use your voice.

Political decisions shape climate policy, energy systems and infrastructure at a scale far beyond individual lifestyle choices. Voting and civic engagement are among the most effective ways to influence long-term climate action.

Did you know: If you're in Sweden: vote in the upcoming election. If you're elsewhere: support a political initiative or sign a petition pushing for climate action. Using your voice is one of the most powerful climate actions you can take.

Are you voting or otherwise getting politically involved this month?

October

Challenge yourself with a "No new purchases" month!

If everyone consumed like we do in most European countries or in the US, we would need about 4 planet Earths. This information becomes even more staggering when considering the fact that we already have enough newly produced clothes to dress 6 future generations of the world's population.

Did you know: Commit to the challenge of not buying any new clothes or other non-vital items for a month!

Planning to skip new purchases in October?

November

Get educated

Pick one documentary or film this month that explores climate, nature or systemic change. Watch it on your own, with friends or together with colleagues.

Suggestions: – Kiss the Ground — Netflix – Breaking Boundaries: The Science of Our Planet — Netflix – Planet Earth III — BBC / SVT Play (availability may vary) – The Letter: A Message for Our Earth — YouTube – Eating Our Way to Extinction — Vimeo / Apple TV – Dark Waters (feature film on environmental justice) — Apple TV / Amazon Prime

Did you know: Public understanding plays a key role in driving political pressure and corporate accountability. Many environmental issues only reached the political agenda after being investigated and communicated through journalism, research and documentary storytelling. Staying informed is part of staying engaged.

Planning to watch one of these this month?

December

Experience over objects

Replace at least one physical Christmas gift with an experience – a shared meal, a class, a day trip or time together.

Did you know: Physical gifts often come with emissions from materials, production, packaging and transport – while experiences typically have a much lower material footprint. Research also shows that experiences tend to create longer-lasting happiness than things.

Less stuff doesn't mean less care. Often, it means more.

Will you be gifting memories this December?

Bonus challenges

Unplug any electrical devices that are not in use this month!

Did you know: "Energy vampires" are devices that keep consuming power from outlets even when they are switched off or in standby mode. These appliances silently contribute to higher energy consumption, which is bad for both the environment and your electricity bill! In total, vampire energy can account for 5-10% of the total energy used in your home.

Commit to unplugging energy vampires this month!

Walk and talk

Did you know: Short meetings are often held indoors despite requiring no screens or documents. Walking meetings reduce energy use, encourage movement and have been shown to improve focus and creativity – while costing nothing and emitting nothing. Not all climate action is about sacrifice. Some changes improve both wellbeing and sustainability at the same time.

Take at least one walking meeting this month instead of sitting indoors. Are you planning on walking it out this month?

Sustainable search engine month

Did you know: Every online search uses electricity. One search has a small footprint, but with billions of searches every day, the impact adds up. Ecosia uses its ad revenue to fund tree planting and ecosystem restoration, with transparent reporting on where the money goes. Trees support more than CO₂ uptake — they also help protect biodiversity, soils and water systems. Small digital choices won't solve the climate crisis, but they can help shift money in a better direction.

Switch your default search engine to one that actively supports climate and ecosystem restoration for the entire month (for example Ecosia). Make the switch this month!

Low-impact cleaning month

Did you know: Many conventional cleaning products contain substances toxic to aquatic life that persist in waterways long after use. Wastewater treatment plants are not designed to filter out all chemical residues, meaning they often end up in rivers, lakes and oceans. Eco-labelled cleaning products are designed to break down faster and reduce long-term harm to ecosystems – protecting both biodiversity and water quality.

Change energy provider

Did you know: Electricity from fossil fuels still makes up around 40% of the electricity in the EU. Swapping to green electricity with your supplier - or changing to one that offers green options - is one of the most impactful things you can do to reduce your footprint and support the transition away from fossil fuels. Spend a few minutes researching green options and make the switch!
